Does it save more water if you use a dish washer?

I am single so I do not have alot of dishes to wash. I used to was them all and put them on a drying rack, though I do have a dishwasher. Does it save water though if you just do it all in one load or if you do them by hand?Does it save more water if you use a dish washer?
it does. but paper plates save even more:)Does it save more water if you use a dish washer?
a dish washer will make your meter spin like crazy. if you don't want to run up your power bill i suggest hand washing.
hmm. really?? i think it saves by doing em all by hand. plus it also saves electricity =]

  • Whats it mean when you have water coming underneath your washer?

I did a load of laundry and water started pouring out from under the washer ,please help, and thanksWhats it mean when you have water coming underneath your washer?
your drain line or water supply line may have come off.Whats it mean when you have water coming underneath your washer?
Before you make any decisions, you need to find out where the water is coming from. Pull your washer back from the wall as far as you can, remove the front, and put a large sheet of paper or cardboard underneath your washer. Then run a load and watch your washer.

The first suspicion would be the hoses (which would be the easiest fix so hope its a hose). Check to see if there's any leaking at attachment points. If your hoses are dry, then watch for where water is dripping (this is where the large sheet of paper comes in handy for isolating exactly where.

Other leaks could be a pump, it could be a tub seal. Based on your mechanical ability, you may just want to call a repairman, but your diagnosis will help them. Repair help and parts are available on the internet.

We have a small tub leak on our second-hand washer. We might fix it someday, but its small enough that we have a bunch of cheap bar towels and just throw one in front of the washer to catch any water. The wet towel gets thrown in with the next wash.

Is it ok to run a Craftsman gas powered pressure washer in the rain?

Just bought a Craftsman pressure washer. Gas powered. Briggs %26amp; Stratton engine. I believe it's a 190cc. Using it on a huge fence and deck. Forecast is for rain for the next few days. Really want to get the job done. Rain doesn't bother me, but is it bad for the motor? Is it ok to run a Craftsman gas powered pressure washer in the rain?
The heat produced from the device running is enough to evaporate any moisture it comes in contact with, ie, light rain storm, inadvertant spray. Is it ok to run a Craftsman gas powered pressure washer in the rain?
The rain will not hurt it at all just don't spray water down into the Carburetor and you will be fine.
it should be fine, if it breaks take it back to sears, they take anything back
wont hurt it if its running,i wouldn't leave it out in the rain

How can I wash my clothes without a washer?more info please help!!!?

It now too late to go to the basement. i have this shirt and a sweater i need to wash. ill wash it by hand(used to that since my country in the old days) so how can i wash it?or what should i use on it thank you soo much..How can I wash my clothes without a washer?more info please help!!!?
The bathtub is a good place. If you can not bend over good, sitting in a chair is good.

    Your regular soap will do.

Hanging them on the curtain rod will do and some towels under the floor under what hangs over.

Or the kitchen sink will do.

You have to swish them real good in the rinse water to get the soap out.How can I wash my clothes without a washer?more info please help!!!?
I hand wash certain shirts all the time because the washer may ruin them. I wash them in the bathroom sink basin. I take a sponge and quickly clean the sink itself. I close the drain and add laundry detergent and swish the item in there and let it soak an hour or so. I rinse it thoroughly and then hang it on one of those special hangers they use for hanging wet items.... you can get in bed bath %26amp; beyond. It has a thick top so it won't get hanging marks. Even better is getting a drying rack you can put across your tub, but that can be a pain in the neck.

I keep a small bottle of laundry detergent in my upstairs bathroom that I transferred from my big bottle downstairs.

It comes in handy for stains too. My son's will get ketchup on their shirt and I put a tiny amount of laundry detergent on the stain and rub it off right away so it doesn't set in.

If you don't have laundry detergent upstairs yet you can use dishwashing detergent or shampoo, but I wouldn't use hand soap or it will leave a scum. RINSE even more thoroughly if using any of these.
Take a clean bucket and baby shampoo or dish soap and lukewarm water and mix in the bucket. Use one quick squirt of either soap and if you feel you need more soap, add more. Put the clothing in the bucket and dunk the clothing up and down several times and then leave to soak for a few minutes (3 to 5) and then dunk up and down several more times. Dump out the soapy water and allow the water to run into the bucket while you begin rinsing the items out in cool, clear water. Dunk the clothing into the water until no more soap appears in the water. Squeeze, don't wring, the clothes out. Take a couple of clean bath towels, lay one item on each towel and then roll the item up in the towel to get rid of the excess water. Hang to dry or put in dryer.
Aaa, you might try using soap and water. Then you might try rinsing it in water.
Shampoo works quite well when hand washing.

Will a power washer do the work of a sandblaster?

    Hi.

I am a sculptor. I have some cast iron sculptures heavily encrusted with ceramic shell investment mold. I was considering buying a sandblaster unit, but I have a small studio and I don't like the idea of dust in the air. I wondered if a high powered pressure washer would have the same affect of blasting off the investment. Ideas? Will a power washer do the work of a sandblaster?
Not normally - and not without introducing some abrasive which will probably be as bad. Another option is bead blasting, but quite honestly given all the health and safety implications plus buying kit you may never use again it would be better to send them off to a specialist shot/sand blaster. Will a power washer do the work of a sandblaster?
not sure but i can tell you a pressure washer works great to take the dull weathered look off wood like porch decks and if you are not careful it will dig a groove in the wood from the force. i think it would do that job but even if not it is a very useful tool to have around the home
I used a power washer recently that had the power to remove varnish of a wood. I doubt your run of the mill will be strong enough you probably will need something industrial.
You can also use the dry ice plaster it the same as sand plaster but no mess because the dry ice dos not leave anything behind.
they make a kit for the presure washer so you can use it as a sand blaster

Are Marine snipers as good as those people who can shoot a bullet through a washer?

As in, on TV yesterday, they were showing all the gun people who were sharp shooters from the wild west, until today. And they could take a little washer, through it up and the air and shoot right through the middle of that nickle sized hole. And they also showed someone who could shoot and arrow right through another arrow like Robin Hood was potrayed as doing.

Can Marine Force Recon Snipers or Navy SEALS Snipers do that with their rifles? Are Marine snipers as good as those people who can shoot a bullet through a washer?
hard to say where fantasy takes over and reality fades away in the scenario you just outlined for us. one thing for sure, i would not care to be 1000 yards down range from a u.s. marine sniper, give him an obscene gesture, and not expect to get drilled between the eyes. they use, for example, remington 700s, 30-06 or 7.62 nato rounds, with high power scopes, and have been trained to dope the wind and elevation to a fare-thee-well.Are Marine snipers as good as those people who can shoot a bullet through a washer?
I guess the only thing these two groups have is accuracy.

But the showman has the time and a number of slow motion video takes to keep doing it until he get's it 'right'. The sniper doesn't have that luxury, - and has to make it count the first time.

Hats off to the sniper for content, - the showman for style.
Probably not, but the important thing is that they could kill you from a great distance, which is what their job requires. So what does it matter?
no, u been watching to much television

Where can I get an appliance mat for my washer?

I'm looking for a mat to put under my clothes washer. It moves around, and now it's leaking. I'll call out the repairman to fix the leak, (it's only 7 months old)but the washer is going to start to ruin my floor with all the movement. I know I've seen mats for both washer and dryers, but now I can't find them. I've looked at Sears and Home Depot. They don't carry them. Anyone have any suggestions? ANTI-VIBRATION WASHING MACHINE PADS

    REDUCE NOISE %26amp; VIBRATION

These washing machine pads are just what you have been looking for to quiet that noisy, vibrating washing machine forever. Yes, these are the very washing machine pads you may have read about lately. They have been written up in industrial product resources, such as ThomasNet.com and appeared in press releases on the Internet. They actually work to dampen vibration and reduce structural transmitted noise through the floor and walls where the washer is located.
Mine is not a mat, it is more like a plastic tray washer sits in, but I have seen these at what I call ';junk stores'; that sell used washers and stuff like that, try that first, may be much cheaper than buying a new one.

Why do my washer leaves my clothes drenched sometimes instead of already dried?

sometimes, my wahser doesnt get all the water out after spinning. when i touch my clothes theyre heavy and water is dripping. how come the washer doesnt finifh the whole water squeexe trnsaxtion? Why do my washer leaves my clothes drenched sometimes instead of already dried?
My washer has a setting for this- extra spin cycle- its not good to your dryer to put those sopping wet clothes in there.. Your load may have been too heavy for the washer to spin it all out... I would try smaller loads..Why do my washer leaves my clothes drenched sometimes instead of already dried?
I stops spinning if it is out of balance. The machine stops completely. You have to reposition the clothes so they are evenly distributed in the washer. Then, run the spin cycle again.
If the first answer doesn't solve the problem, then it's time to call the repair man...or get a new washer.

just take the ten minutes and get some big cups and start scooping out the water. I assume you tried to reset the washer to a new wash cycle to make sure it wasn't unbalanced. If this is the case...happy scooping. Get that water out of there..it's stagnating!!!

In my municipality, you have to pay $10 to have it hauled off. It is classified as ';white goods';, very hard to recycle. There isn't much if any aluminum and the steel is hard to separate from the rest of the junk. The most valuable part might be the copper in the motor. Remove that and it might be worth a few cents.

What is HE detergent and will it ruin my washer?

I'd rather not return it if I don't have too. Thanks in advance. What is HE detergent and will it ruin my washer?
HE stands for High Effiiciency detergent what it is; is an highly concentrated detergent it should not ruin your toploading washer but you should be aware that if using this type of detergent you would need to use the same amount of detergent that is recommended on the box for high efficiency models, don't use more as this could potentially ruin your machine and your plumbing it will not ruin your clothes but would recommend an extra rinse for your clothes as it could make some fabrics stiff as the toploading machine would not rinse out the detergent enough as a front loader would Good Luck !What is HE detergent and will it ruin my washer?

It will actually be good for your washer. well It might Not clean quite as well as the usual toploader stuff but it is still sufficient for washing your clothes. It can be used in the watersaving toploaders so theres no harm done using it in a regular agitator washer. maybe use a tiny bit more for best results.

I live alone, so perhaps a small dishwasher plus maybe a little cupboard.... Can anyone recommend a suitable small dishwasher?Dishwashers: I just built a utility room and I now have a gap where the washer used to be.?
if the gap was a clothes washer then it will almost certainly be either 500 or 600 mm wide.. the space of a standard size dishwasher. compact dishwashers are narrower. so buying a compact dishwasher wont work... you will still have a gap.

best thing to do is to actually measure the gap and then do a search on somewhere like Comet or one of the on line white goods retailiers

Id try and indentify who made the kitchen you may be able to get a replacement unit (or door), or failing that you could consider getting the doors replaced. its not to expensive and put in a cheap unit from anothe kitchen supplierDishwashers: I just built a utility room and I now have a gap where the washer used to be.?
We have a slimline dishwasher as our kitchen is small and there is only 2 of us but I usually end up washing them up by hand so I wouldn't recommend you get one if you are on your own
why dont you put a 600 base unit in and fit one of those pull out ironing boards inside the drawer, thats if you have enough room.
table to fold you stuff ,,you can,t do any better then that
I had only limited space in my kitchen after the other bits were fitted, but managed to get a dishwasher to fit . It is only 17.5'; wide and has room in it for 8 place settiings, ample for me on my own. It is a Zanussi , the model DS 16 .. but not sure if it is still done.. I am sure there must be some major retailers with web sites to help you farther.

There are so many different types of washers that it's difficult to give any general advice on this. But my guess is that if the power is out, you may need to wait for it to come back on, as the washer may have some type of automatic lock.

    Hope it works out.

I have no idea which connection on the back of the washer is for hot and which is for cold. I have lost the manual. Can anyone help out?I am attempting to hook up my washer in my new house and have a question.?
On the washing machines that I have hooked up the inlets have always been marked with writing or color code, red for hot and blue for cold. It it in sot marked just hook them up set the machine for hot or cold and if the opposite temperature incurs just switch the hoses. This will not harm the machine.I am attempting to hook up my washer in my new house and have a question.?
Should have red and blue connectors. Red = hot
Look for an H or C stamped into the metal above or below the connections.
look at the bracket that the hoses attach they are normally stamped if not ,the top hose is usually the cold ,but no worries turn the washer to cold hook up the hoses itn any order if the connection is correct cold water will start to fill if not reverse the hoses
alot of times the 'H' is cut right into the sheet metal and if your not aware of this you may be looking right at it and not see it. other wise just hook it up and with nothing in it, run a load with it set on hot. if it doesn't get hot just switch the hoses
If you have two inlets, the one with the red dot, or marked as H, will be for the hot water feed.

What's the best cleaner to use to clean the inside of your washer?

I dilute liquid laundry soap to wash it. I use a wash cloth that I am about to throw into the laundry anyway, too. I clean the outside of the washer this way first, but I also clean the inside if there is visible dirt left behind from the previous load of laundry.

Generally, the inside of the washing machine cleans itself while it is washing your laundry. Your clothes work as one big washcloth, lathered with your laundry soap. But the outside (specifically, the lid) is another story鈥攊t can get wet (usually from stain-removing spray) and then dirt clings to it. I clean the lid, or the outside of the machine, frequently, but the inside if it appears dirty (from an especially filthy load of laundry that I just washed, for example).

Since I use liquid laundry soap, I dab a washcloth in the little cup I use to measure the liquid, then I wet it with water and agitate it to get it lathered up. This is what I use to clean the washing machine mainly because I think of it as appropriate for the job. Besides that, after the rag is dirty, I can put it in the wash with my other laundry.

I would not be likely to clean the rag along with my other wash if I used a chemical to clean the machine. I would worry about how a chemical might affect my next load of laundry, especially since one of my kids has sensitive skin. What's the best cleaner to use to clean the inside of your washer?
why would you want to clean the inside of your washer that has just gotten done washing with soap and hot water and rinsing with clear water? it's already clean. But hey, if you want to get rid of soap scum you surely could use something like windex. What's the best cleaner to use to clean the inside of your washer?
    Baking soda or vinegar
Hate to answer you with another question, but what made it dirty? What substance are you trying to remove? This will determine what chemicals you need to use.
Vinegar. Through a cup of white vinegar in the wash or run an empty cycle with it.
use 1/2 cup bleach and reg amt of lsundrt detergent. If you have old cleaning rags, you can wash them while you are cleaning, if not just run a wash load empty.

Where does the thermal relief valve go on a Honda Excell XR2600 Pressure washer?

I have a 5hp Honda Excell XR2600 pressure washer. I talked to the reps on the phone and they told me it was the thermal relieve valve was the problem I was having. It would make pressure sometimes and then othertimes not. I got the part 16484 and I just don't see where it goes. I have had the pump off and I still don't see where it goes. Any help would be appreciated.Where does the thermal relief valve go on a Honda Excell XR2600 Pressure washer?
I'm afraid the rep may have mislead you. The thermal relief valve only activates if the pump over heats by releasing hot water from the pump to make room for cooler water. It does nothing for making pressure. The pressure problem you describe would be connected with either the pressure relief valve, or the pump valves, or both.Where does the thermal relief valve go on a Honda Excell XR2600 Pressure washer?
You do not need to pull the pump off..it is external right under neath the pump..itwill be visibly leaking when they go out..will be very small drops but visible

How do I clear the Low Washer Fluid Level message?

I have one of those little irritating problems with my 2000 Lincoln LS. I added windshield washer fluid but can't clear the Low Washer Fluid Level message. It just keeps coming back. Tried pressing reset button several times. I do not have an owner's manual for my car. Anyone know how to do this or where to look for help? How do I clear the Low Washer Fluid Level message?
Look at the washer fluid bottle --if you can see it -- and about half down or so there will be a sensor with 2 wires going to it , disconnect the plug that holds the wires in and the annoying problem will be gone. How do I clear the Low Washer Fluid Level message?
If adding fluid to fill the bottle doesn't turn it off, then the switch is faulty. Replace the switch, or jumper it so as to show cxonstant full.
A mechanic can probably replace the sensor. I am sure the dealer could.

Thanks so much to all who answered my question about the new washer where clothes do not smell clean?

after being washed. I especially like the answers about hard water and 20 mule team borax. I tried the borax and the smell is better, but there is a new problem: some of the clothes I take out seem totally ';encrusted'; with detergent or the borax, I don't know. I am not using too much of either. What is wrong now? Please help! Thanks so much to all who answered my question about the new washer where clothes do not smell clean?
You may be using too much detergeant of borax, or adding too many clothes for the load/water level. If the clothing can't move around freely through the water, the soap won't be dissolved completely. Hard water also has a hard time dissolving soap, even with the borax to help soften it, it has to dissolve in the water. You need to add your detergeant and the borax to the washer as it fills, and may even have to let it agitate a bit before you add the clothing. That way you will know it is dissolved and won't crust up on the clothing. You will also be able to see when you have a full load, rather than guessing. The only other solution is to switch to a liquid detergeant. The borax will still need to be added as the washer fills, without clothing, but the detergeant can be added in whenever you like. Thanks so much to all who answered my question about the new washer where clothes do not smell clean?
try not 2 put tooo many clothes in the load, and maybe u need a new washer!
Are you putting in the right amount of water and detergent for the load? It sounds like you have too little water and too much detergent for the load of clothes. I always use half as much detergent as they tell you to use. Lift the lid while the clothes are washing and see if you have enough water in there. Maybe your washer isn't filling with water properly.

My house was built in early 1950. The drain hole for my washer is 1'; and too small for the new drain hose.

I had to replace my washer and the new drain hose is larger than the 1'; drain hole pipe. It is made of flexible plastic, so a hose clamp won't work on it. Any suggestions? My house was built in early 1950. The drain hole for my washer is 1'; and too small for the new drain hose.
The newer washers have much more powerful pumps and need a larger discharge hose and piping. Code has been changed to 2'; discharge piping for washers from the old 1-1/2';. You may need to replace the pipe that the hose goes into. You can find the washer hook-up fixtures at Home Centers. My house was built in early 1950. How do you keep bed sheets from getting tangled up in the washer/dryer?

it will be hard, just put one at atimeHow do you keep bed sheets from getting tangled up in the washer/dryer?
Dont overload for one thing, and maybe use softner in the wash cycle. How do you keep bed sheets from getting tangled up in the washer/dryer?
In the washer loosely put the sheets in a circular motion when adding. Then the pillow cases around them.I can't figure my new dryer it rolls my sheets into a complete ball.I keep checking on them.Sorry no help with the dryer part...
Dont overload for one thing, and maybe use softner in the wash cycle.
I put my sheets in the washer this way- I don't wad them up, I lay them long ways and put them around the whole washer. I end up layering them in the washer this way and they never get tangled. You can get them tangled if you have too much in the laundry at once.
place them in a net bag while washing, that would clean them and prevent it from being tangled up
I don't think that that is easily done. I sometimes leave the bed sheets soaking in the bath, a larger area, to wet. Then, after several hours I turn the sheets over, after that, I hang them on the washing line and it's done just like the washing machine.
well do less than what you normally do.

they shouldn't be too tangled up.

    K
They shdnt get tangled up unless the load of clothes is too much.

My automatic washer causes house lamps to flicker when the motor starts?

it also causes my sound system to produce low frequency sound, what is the reason for that?, and is it dangerous? My automatic washer causes house lamps to flicker when the motor starts?
Yup, you have wiring problems, which are causing the lights to flicker when the washer starts. You should get an electrician to check it out. The outlet for the washer may be incorrectly wired, or your service drop may be undersized. Or the flicker may be small enough to be considered not a problem, but you should have it checked.

I don't know what you mean by ';produce low frequency sound';... is it 60/120 Hz hum? Or is it a transient that goes away after a fraction of a second? A good sound system should not be bothered by small to medium dips in the line voltage such as you describe.

.My automatic washer causes house lamps to flicker when the motor starts?
It is normal for the voltage to vary.

    How much, +10% -15%

How much is that, to some people it is nothing to others it is unacceptable!

    Have your electrical system checked.

It also depends where you are electrically. How far from the distribution transformer. The closer the more stable, the further the more towards +10-15%

About your stereo, it depends on the design for a good part; also if you operate near clipping it (any system) will make some audible noise during the transition.

Hope this properly answers your question

How do you strip down a refidgerator, a washer, and a dryer for recycling and how much are they worth?

I was just wondering how to recycle different things and what they may be worth approximately...How do you strip down a refidgerator, a washer, and a dryer for recycling and how much are they worth?
Don't waste your time. There is a scrap metal yard near where I work. Every morning there is a huge stack of old appliances outside their gates. The metal content is not worth much at all and people just drop them off to get rid of them.

Is there any way to keep white clothes white in a well water operated washer?

My washer at home has recieved negligence from my poor well water situation, I obviously need a super-powered watersoftener. Although, I was hoping someone out there could enlighten me on how to keep my white clothes rust-free? This should be interesting...Is there any way to keep white clothes white in a well water operated washer?
Iron out works best.Is there any way to keep white clothes white in a well water operated washer?
Most grocery and hardware stores carry a product called ';RIT'; Rust Remover'; to put in your washing machine with your clothes and soap etc. that takes the red out. The other thing you can do is treat the well yourself { assuming its a private well } by opening to cap and pooring a gallon of bleech directly into the well. Put the cap back on and wait 4-8 hrs before runing water. Then flush the well and lines for an hour or so before resuming normal use.
I put a water filter on the intake hoses for the washer and it helped 100% You can get it at the hardware store.
There is a product call 'iron out' just make sure that none of the clothes have colors on them because it will faid colors.
Iron out, dissolve in hot water before you add to washer. Directions R on back of box. Stinks but you'll love the results

Spreading of staff infections in a community used washer and dryers?

My mother lives in a retirement community and a lady has a staff infection on her leg. They all share the washers and dryers, can the staff infection be spread by using these machines after her.Spreading of staff infections in a community used washer and dryers?
no. staph is on almost everyone's skin already. an open wound and (i am convinced) a weakened immune system will allow it entry. staph is no superbug, it is killed by normal things like high temperatures and soap.

How do I stop darks and ink t-shirts/clothing from fading in the washer and/or dryer?

Does anyone know how to keep the darks and other inked clothing from fading whenever I do the darks and colored clothing laundry????

ThanksHow do I stop darks and ink t-shirts/clothing from fading in the washer and/or dryer?
They now make some detergents for dark clothing. Also, don't use the dryer ever. The dryer is what causes the most damage. Just air dry.How do I stop darks and ink t-shirts/clothing from fading in the washer and/or dryer?
1.Before washing your shirt sort your clothing to prevent color bleeding.

2.Read the label of each t-shirt before washing.

3.Wash your t-shirts in cool water since hot water can release more of the dye from the t-shirt.

    4. Dry your t-shirt inside out and on a cool temperature.
Buy a big bottle of white vinegar in the salad dressing section at the store. Use 1/2 cup of vinegar in the wash. It will help set the colors and keep them from fading so fast.
Turn clothing inside out and wash in cold water and use Clorox 2. Do not dry in the machine; hang or flat dry. If you must use the dryer, dry on low setting only.
    Use cold water wash.

    Warm dry.

The color goes away in washing mode.

And there are some detergents that say color fast.

Are a washer and a dryer required in a hair salon?

I AM OPENING A NEW HAIR SALON IN PLANTATION, FLORIDA.

I CAN'T FIND IN ANY WEB PAGE EITHER FROM THE CITY OF PLANTATION, OR FROM THE FLA. DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL REGULATIONS, ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THIS.

    PLEASE HELP!

THANK YOU!Are a washer and a dryer required in a hair salon?
Check with the city or state level health department, also the state department that handles salon licensing. I am not in the field but I am a customer who tries to be aware of what is typically needed to provide services. Since salons need to have a ready supply of clean towels, it only makes sense that they need an easy way of washing the dirty ones daily. When I think about it, every place I've had my hair cut has had one, even though they are smallish. Are a washer and a dryer required in a hair salon?
Call up the State board....But I would think you'd want one even if they're not required, What would ever happen if you ran out of clean towels? People wouldn't want their soping wet hair ontop of their head, or using dirty towels...You'd lose business that way.
In Maryland, a washer and dryer are not required. You could call your State Board and ask them.

Does it use more electricity when running both washer and dryer?

My husband and I have an ongoing debate. He says it uses more electricity when I run the clothes washer and dryer at the same time. I say it uses the same amount as it does to run them one at a time.Does it use more electricity when running both washer and dryer?
he is right... you get charged kilowatt per hour. Does it use more electricity when running both washer and dryer?
You are right. Your husband does have a point though.

By using both washer and dryer at the same time, you are using more electricity at the time they are both running, than if you were to run the washer, then the dryer, then the washer, then the dryer. What you are doing is increasing your peak load. While peak load might not matter to you as a household, imagine if everyone did their washing AND their drying at the same time (say, 5pm to 6pm every Monday). That would cause a spike in overall usage on the system, and since the utilities have to generate enough power at all times to meet whatever peak demand is or might conceivably be, that would mean they would have to generate more in order to be able to deliver enough power for everyone to do a load of washing and a load of drying all at once.

So by not using multiple appliances at the same time, you won't change at all the amount of energy you are consuming, but you will change your peak load, and that may indirectly change the amount of energy the utility is generating. (Note that some commercial customers pay a rate for kilowatt hours used, as well as a rate for the peak load through the month; this is to encourage businesses to cut their peak loads.)

One of the main problems with peak power is that during peak power loads is the time when coal, the dirtiest form of generation, is most often burnt to generate electricity. So by doing your bit to avoid peaking your own power use, you are possibly helping reduce the amount of coal being burnt on your behalf.

But more important than not washing and drying at the same time would be trying to do your washing and your drying late at night when there is very low demand. That's why so many ENERGY STAR washers and dryers come with delay timers, so you can set the wash or dry cycle at 10pm but not have it start until 1 or 2 am when demand is very low. This doesn't save you energy but it saves the system energy.

If you're paying a tiered rate for electricity, as more and more areas are, you'll definitely save by running your washer and dryer overnight as you sleep.

More than you asked for, but I hope it will help settle this debate and return you and your husband to marital bliss!
it is the same. If you were a business with 300 washers and 300 dryers, you would have a demand meter that has a portion of the bill based on how many things are on at once. But, as a house, you do not have a demand meter. You pay only on your usage.

if you bet, Have him pay up of I will send over my friend Tony!

And for those that stuff your washer and dryer full, you are wasting energy! Dryer energy use is dependant on how dry the clothes are going into it and how much room they have to quickly move the moisture out!! Overloading the washers doesn't let the spin cycle work efficently, so the clothes go to the dryer to wet. then stuffing the dryer to much won't let the clothes stuck in the middle to dry and the hot air just over heats the outer items and the energy goes out the vent and not into the drying.
Hm, I would think that it uses the same amount. If you would like to save electricity, I recommend hanging your clothes outside to dry. It saves you money, makes your clothes feel fresh (especially bedding) and doesn't wear as much on the fabrics.
I pack my washing machine down, use cold water, and use small amounts of water, and when I run the dryer- I pack it full of wet clothes to get everything at one time.
    You are correct..

    Same amount...
YES MMMMMMMMMMMUUUUUUCHHHHHHHHH more .but a way to save 5$ is wash clothes with cold water
